This promises to be an inspiring event, with audience participation as well as performances to listen to and enjoy. We are taking the new Christian Science Hymnal Supplement as our starting point. The programme will include the singing of a number of Supplement hymns, including some of the more unusual and less easy to follow ones. We hope that you, our audience, will join in and swell the sound!
We are delighted that the Newsong Group will be leading and accompanying us. The Group comprises Andrew D. Brewis, Airlie Scott and Tamsin Bland ... three young Christian Scientists. Two of Andrew's compositions appear in the Supplement. You may already be familiar with their published albums: Songburst - Hymns with a beat! and Gracenotes - Songs of Peace and Love. The Supplement hymns will be interspersed with other inspirational songs performed by Andrew, Airlie and Tasmin, and some other items.
In an article in the January 2010 Christian Science Journal entitled 'The Singing Church' Peter B Allen gives some of the background to the evolution of the Supplement ... how it embraces musical styles from areas of the world where there were no Christian Science churches when the previous supplement was created. It is his hope that the new Supplement is not seen 'as a confusing diversion, but as a rich blessing, one that deserves a warm, unanimous reception'. He says that 'The primary goal of hymn singing is spiritual, not musical. Mary Baker Eddy wrote: ''Music is divine. Mind, not matter, makes music''.'
We hope very much that you will be able to join us at Reading Church on the afternoon of Sunday 21 March. If you have queries, please email us, or phone the Reading Room on 0118 590532.
